lisa lampanelli

i'm not a big comedy person but i noticed this fat old white lady in the two roasts i've seen on comedy central (pam anderson and william shatner) and always wondered who the hell she was.
well last night on my flight back from new york (jetblue rocks), i caught the hour and ahalf special of her standup on comedy central. i gotta say, it was one of the funniest things i've ever seen and literally, everyone in my row plus front and back were watching the same thing.

here's a clip but find the rest of it on youtube....

3 songs that i don't want you to know about

omarion.jpg

songs that i hide on my itunes list..

here are the 3 songs i currently like for some reason (but don't want anyone knowing that i do).

the list is in no particular order (i think)

1. ice box by omarion - i don't care what my boy jamil says, this song is the shit. our associate editor (giselle) and resident mixtape king (paul chang) are with me on this one. despite the corny lyrics "i got this ice box where my heart used to be" i can't help but to play this more than once a day. play this shit in your car while it's raining outside (preferably with a girl sitting shot gun) and you'll get it.

2. cupid's chokehold by gym class heroes - this is a pretty damn cheesy song but i like cheese. the singer from falloutboy sings the hook while travis from gch recites killer rhymes like "if i had to choose her over the sun, i'd be one nocturmal son of a gun" jokes aside, it's one of those songs you sing out loud when no one's looking (i need tints on my ride).

3. lost without you by robin thicke - a white soulful singer... is there such a thing? i can't answer that one but i can tell you that this is a song you'd play in your bedroom when you're trying to round the bases. the beat on this sounds like some 70 yr old man is playin spanish guitar in the back of a taco spot but i guess it does the trick. play on...

by the way, if you like my writing (and/or urb), check us out on urb.com

our blogs are up n running...

my 06 awards go to ....

06 Derek Jeter Studio Portrait.jpg

since i'm a big fan of both music and sports, i figured i'd give out a few music awards in the name of some athletes we're all familiar with. if you don't get this, you shouldn't even be online.

1.DEREK JETER award aka whether you're a yankees or red sox fan/ whether you're a hip hop backpacker or a silk shirt wearing dutschbag, you respected this artist(s) in 06.

GNARLS BARKLEY (winners) - what can i say? they graced our dec cover as URB's artist of the year. you can argue that it's a homer pick but no artist(s) got as many rave reviews while going platinum in 06.

T.I. ("urban" category) - with a multi-plat album (king) and arguably the biggest club record of the year (what you know), T.I. is one rapper that no one has taken a shot at. while even jay-z gets jabbed by the likes of jim jones and lil wayne, T.I. remains as the only rap dude that's getting travis barker-like man crushes (no lance bass).

TV ON THE RADIO ("guitar music" category) - while i don't really know a single song from this band, every indie rock'ish magazine and hipsters seem to think they're best thing since vodka redbulls (plus we had them on our cover in 05). i'll have to start listening to them soon.

2. KOBE BRYANT (aka love me or hate me) award

DIPSET (winner) - everyone knows that i'm super partial to the harlem kings (dipset all day!), but as brandon can attest, these guys bring the heat every season (dipset christmas!). if you hate cam, juelz, jimmy & co, you're probably the same people that think jay-z's still the king (kingdom's done, homie).

LADY SOVEREIGN (honorable mention) - while URB staff (myself, included) are still down with the 'biggest midget in the game,' she's also alienated some fans and press through her 'episodes' at shows in the US. in case sov and her peeps are reading this, i still got love for y'all!

3. TERRELL OWENS aka george bush aka no one likes me award

K-FED (unanimous winner) - i almost feel bad for the dude because i don't think i've ever seen anyone get hated on harder than ex-mr. spears does. seriously though, at least vanilla ice had a hit and some talent (yes, he did and don't front like he didn't).

4. THE NATIONAL ANTHEM AWARD - songs that got played in every f*ckin' club this year

a 3-way tie,

WHAT YOU KNOW by T.I. - as stated already, you couldn't goto a club that didn't play this, especially before/during the summer (when this song went on, glasses broke everywhere and you could actually get a drink at the bar)

WE FLY HIGH by jim jones - baaaaalllliinn' nuff said (btw, the remix video is by far the BEST video of the year)

WE ARE YOUR FRIEND by justice featuring simian - every indie rock/hipster DJ played this song (and i started to like it). besides, it made kanye flip out at the euro mtv awards so that alone gives it my vote.

kobe bryant is a hater

i was lucky enough to watch the lakers vs wizards game the other night where my boy brian cook hit a 3 to tie the game and force overtime. but of course, the story of the game was kobe dueling gilbert arenas as they combined for 105 points.

unfortunately for kobe, it was arenas who dropped 60 points on him (kobe had 45) and while i was never a big fan of gilbert arenas, after watching that game (overtime in particular), dude is just SICK. with an array of moves that included three pointers, pull up jumpers, cutting to the basket and just drivin through the lane, mr buckets (my new nickname for arenas) was unstoppable.

now most players would tip their hat after seeing this and everyone praised kobe when he scored 81 last year against the raptors (another game i happened to watch), but kobe of course, isn't like everyone else. he was sippin the HATERADE after the game while making comments that gilbert arenas was taking bad shots and didn't have a conscience.

ummm... kobe saying that someone else doesn't have a conscience??!? just when i was laying off on kobe/lakers, he gives us another reason to hate (on) him.

all i gotta say is, sorry dude, you're not THE best wing player in the league anymore. lebron and dwade are definitely better; with carmelo on the cusp of surpassing kobe as well. on that sunday night, gilbert arenas scorched you from all over the court.

last thing i gotta say is.... if you don't want others hating on you, don't be hating on others yourself, homie.

jim jones work out regimen

you know that URB is the shit and i rep it 24-7....

however, if you pick up the dec issue of complex with lil wayne and travis barker on the cover, you'll see a piece with jim jones talking about his work out regimen. it's fuckin hilarious... make sure you check that out.

you can also peep this clip and fastforward to the end where he benchpresses the chick on 106 & park... the capo is just a fun dude and that's why he's cool in our book.

say what you will but camron is definitely one of the sickest lyricists out there. this isn't a new song but definitely my favorite... killa's second and third verses on this is just ridiculous.

miami talk...

as some of you may know, miami (south beach) during the winter music conference (march 20-25 in 07) is MY FAVORITE week of the year. trips over seas is nice. laying out in remote islands is relaxing. and the big city clubs are fun. you want all the above?? you goto south beach miami in march and you get ALL THE ABOVE.

pool/rooftop parties, 24 hour liquor licenses, nude beach, girls from all over the country/world, ... etc. some of my best memories/stories come from this very week every march.

i already booked my shit. hope you got yours!

REX GROSSMAN

for being from chicago, i'm not much of a chicago sports fan. i'm a fighting illini fan, of course (i graduated from u of i in 2003) but for pro sports, i tend to root for my favorite players and their teams (hines ward and the pittsburgh steelers for football and jalen rose and which ever team he's with now).

now every 3-4 years, bears catch the luckiest breaks EVER (remember a couple of seasons ago with all the crazy returns and interceptions?!), only to get embarrassed in the playoffs (steve smith anyone?!).

while i hate to hate on the bears, let's please get rex grossman out of there and put woody paige's favorite brian griese in there. ha. rex grossman's throws are as bad as my boy dan's jokes.

here's some footage of our boy rex... you be the judge

87649937-S.jpg
everyone around him is moving so fast while he's unwinding that throw... 1 mississippi ... 2 mississippi... you get the point

DSCF4138.JPG
even my mom knows that grossman's been throwin picks because of his poor mechanics. even his action figure throws off his back foot!

rex_grossman.jpg
ok so i'm not trying to rat him out or anything but what the fuck?! after practices, rex is partying at a wicker park hangout doing balloons til he falls backwards. dude, you need those braincells if you want to call the right play.

i think we've displayed enough reasons as to why the bears need a new QB.

the players finally fight back...

man, fuck a david stern... i recognize that he's done a lot of good for NBA but the past few years, he's been on a crazy power-trip trying to regulate the league and its players like they're his grandkids.

first with the dress codes (among other random shit) and this year with the new toy ball and the 'sheed rule, mr stern is on a power trip.

many players including lebron, shaq, and yao (yes even yao fuckin ming) complained about the synthetic ball (which i'm sure david stern took a bribe for) so now the players association is taking a stand and sueing the league.

word up, son.
